Artist Statement

My art is a joyful and spiritual rebellion to a society that continues to ask me to hide or shrink in all capacities. Primarily figurative, my art features soft, fat nude bodies, referencing memories of my own reflection and mirroring elements of nature that exist without apology.* In a healing act of resistance and a liberating representation of bodies that look like mine, I present the figures in my art as miraculous expressions of the universe that deserve to be honored, seen, and celebrated in their fullness. Nudity in my work offers an alternative to mainstream representations and a warped lens in which I had become accustomed to viewing and valuing myself. I continue to make and share my art because it is something I wish I had always had access to, and something I still need to see.

*The sky does not apologize for being so vast and ever-changing. The sun does not apologize for shining so bright and being so hot. They simply exist, and take up the space the universe intended them to. When I look deeply at nature, I know I am made of the same stuff as anything and everything. I see my truest reflections — and I too, refuse to apologize for being vast, ever-changing, bright, and hot.
